European Commission funds new EquityCancer-LA project

2021-05-27

Improving equity in access to early diagnosis of cancer: implementation research in different healthcare systems of Latin America (EquityCancer-LA)a new project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 programme, in which institutions from Spain, Denmark, Portugal, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador are participating.

The new research project, which is a continuation of the Equity-LA I and Equity-LA II projects, aims to evaluate the effectiveness in each context of the implementation of a multicomponent integrated health care intervention to improve the early diagnosis of common cancers in health service networks in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. To achieve this objective, a participatory, interdisciplinary and mixed-methods research will be implemented with two branches: 1) a quasi-experimental (pre-post) design with one intervention and one control health services network; 2) a case study design. ICT tools will also be adopted to the research activities as needed in a COVID-19 context.

This project is expected to contribute to improve early diagnosis of cancer, thus contributing to increase survival rates, quality of life and productivity in Latin America, where cancer morbidity and mortality remain high due to late diagnosis.

The institutions involved in the project are: Sant Joan de Déu Foundation (Spain), Universidade Nova Lisboa (Portugal), Kobenhavs Universitet (Denmark), Universidad de Chile (Chile), Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Colombia), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (Ecuador) and Consorci de Salut i d'Atenció Social de Catalunya (coordinator-Spain).

The project will be funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 research support programme and is framed within the SC1-BHC-17-2020 theme, which has the strategic objective: "Global Alliance Against Chronic Diseases (GACD) - Prevention and/or Early Diagnosis of Cancer".
