Low levels of coordination in health service networks in Colombia analyzed in a new article of the Equity-LA II project

The article Care coordination in two of Bogota's public healthcare networks: A cross-sectional study among doctors has just been published by the prestigious International Journal of Care Coordination. The article is the result of collaboration between the Spanish team of the Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya (CSC) and the Colombian team of the Universidad del Rosario (Colombia), within the framework of the Equity-LA II project.
The improvement of coordination of care is a priority of the health system in Colombia, where its absence is related to the loss of quality and efficiency. The article analyses the experience and perception of clinical coordination between levels of care of doctors in two public health service networks in Bogotá and what factors are associated, by applying the COORDENA questionnaire to primary care and hospital doctors in two public health service networks in Bogotá.
The results show limited experience and low perception of clinical coordination by doctors. Thus, limited transfer of clinical information, limited coordination of clinical management with deficits in patient follow-up and long waiting times for specialized care are identified. Factors associated with the perception of clinical coordination between levels include sociodemographic factors (being female, being over 50 years old, being a specialist physician), work factors (having less than one year of work experience, working less than 20 hours per week in the center), attitude to work (job satisfaction), organizational factors (having time available to perform coordination tasks and not identifying limitations in clinical practice imposed by health insurance companies).
The results come from the baseline of the Equity-LA II project.
