The University of Pernambuco is a public higher education institution, created in 1990. It has its central facilities in Recife, but also decentralised campus in several cities of Pernambuco and also offers on-line training. It provides graduate and postgraduate training in sciences, health sciences, natural sciences and training of trainers.

The Research Centre Aggeu Magalhães (CpqAM), created in 1950, is a technical scientific unit of Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) that develops its work in training and research in several fields of public health. Its Community Health Department specialises in health planning, management, health services assessment, public policy and quantitative research methods and contributes to the North Eastern health personnel training, particularly those working in the National Health System (SUS). It maintains a permanent collaboration with the health services aiming at improving health care delivery.

Instituto Materno Infantil de Pernambuco, a non profit non-governmental institution created in 1960, is recognised by the Ministry of Education as a Teaching Hospital and by the Ministry of Health as a referral hospital. Its main areas of work are: health care provision; teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates (Master, short courses and specialisation in Mother and Child Health) and research in epidemiology, mother and child health, diagnosis and treatment methods, evaluation of health programmes and community based projects.
